The Homeward Trek - the sequel 2018 Plans are now being made for this event which will take place between 14 July and 21 July, 2018. We have block booked the seven self catering cottages at Minmore Mews near Shillelagh. Subject to availability and demand we may also be booking the nearby Minmore Cottages. At the moment we are in the process of negotiating prices for accommodations, bus hire, meals, entry charges etc. Come early autumn we hope to have a pricing for those wishing to join us for the week. You can provisionally book a place by contacting email@example.com. Suggestions for activities are very much at the 'being tossed around' stage. We can say with a certain amount of certainty that the following will form part of the 'Sequel':
Guided tour by an expert on vernacular housing, including famine housing, in Co Wicklow
Hands on genealogical assistance for those participating. This will include full use of databases gleaned from the Fitzwilliam manuscripts as well as the parochial records for parishes on the estate.
Guided tour of the magnificent art work to be found on tombstones in ancient cemeteries such as Preban and Kilcashel
Walk through the remnants of the ancient oak forest of Shillelagh (at Tomnafinogue) combined with walking tour of Shillelagh.
Use of the revamped Games Room at Minmore for illustrated talks, entertainment etc.
More BBQ's and campfire sharing of history, folklore and genealogy
In recognition of the youth of Canada as a nation we will emphasise features of our county's ancient history. We intend having excursions to the ancient monastery at Glendalough, St Finian's monastery at Aghowle and the ancient hill fort at Rathgall.
As in the past we would hope to bring participants to visit the exact location from where their ancestors departed.
We would advise that those interested in 'coming home' in 2018 should contact us as soon as possible with a view to having their names added to a 'first refusal' list. In this way you can reserve a place without any commitment. When our itinerary is complete and our price fixed we will be seeking those coming to make a firm commitment to travelling for what should be a memorable weekend spent in your homeland. If you are interested in 'coming home' please keep watching this page for updates to our plans.
The dates in July do not suit me? if that is the case you have another option If that is the case you have the option of coming to us either individually, in a small group or as a family group. We understand that some people might prefer coming either in the Spring or in the Fall when our Irish landscape is at its most beautiful and air fares may be little cheaper. We would be pleased to put together and cost a package tour for a homecoming. In this way you can mix and match from activities such as:
Choose between self catering, full board or B&B accomodation
Plan your individualised tours of the estate, its towns and villages
An option to visit and see the Fitzwilliam manuscripts in Ireland's National Library.
Individual assistance in researching your ancestors.
If you you need more information about this option do not hesitate to get in touch. Just mail firstname.lastname@example.org
What participants have said about the Homeward Trek 2016 "The Homeward Trek was one of the most memorable and wonderful experiences of my life. Returning 'Home' to Ireland to be so warmly greeted and embraced by our hosts Kevin and Eleanor Lee, was just the beginning of a week of historical and genealogical adventures. Visits to my ancestral home and to Carnew Castle were personal highlights for me. I know that every other participant had their own poignant moments as they connected with their past. The Homeward Trek is an experience that every person of Irish descent, no matter where they live, should be able to participate in. May it continue long into the future." Alana Stephens
"We want to thank you for a wonderful time in Ireland. You made the week a terrific experience and went out of your way to make everyone comfortable. You are great at hosting and bringing the event together. The special things you did such as the Lawrence reunion were above and beyond expectations" Jim & Mary Dunn
"Many, many thanks to the organisers and all involved for a Homeward Trek extravaganza that will never be forgotten. The long walk down the lane to John and Martha's holding was the highlight of the journey home. It was so emotional knowing that they travelled that very same route. Meeting our Irish Lawrence cousins was so very special. Thanks again Kevin and Eleanor for an experience to be remembered for life." Dianne Lawrence
'Kevin was an amazing resource and his zeal to discover and research our family history and to share his knowledge of the area was inspiring and beyond my expectations. The week long experience gave me a true sense of who I am and from where I descended. It was a very moving and phenomenal experience for me. A piece of Ireland will remain in my heart always and while this started as my trip of a lifetime, I came back to Canada knowing that I will return 'home' again soon." Elizabeth Krajewski
